The catalogue you are about to examine reflects an excellent academic tradition that dates back to 1863. Boğaziçi University which was formally established as a state university on September 12, 1971, has its origins in Robert College, founded in 1863 as one of the first American colleges outside the United States. This university has constantly tried to build on that excellent tradition by adapting its academic programs to a changing environment. Today we strive to develop as a research university while maintaining our commitment to undergraduate education. Internationally oriented faculty and talented students are our most important assets supporting our efforts towards this goal. Boğaziçi University makes every effort to maintain its traditional excellence in undergraduate education. In recent years, the university has also decided to increase the emphasis on its graduate programs and research. The recent expansion of graduate programs is a good reflection of this development. Currently, the university accommodates approximately 12000 students. About 8500 of these are undergraduate students and the rest are graduate students, including those in the preparatory year. Boğaziçi University believes in continuing education around the year. To that end, we offer our students the Summer Term in addition to the Fall and the Spring terms. True to its tradition, Boğaziçi also emphasizes a rich student life outside the classroom. A large number of student clubs offer our students a wide range of extracurricular activities. Close and informal faculty-student relations are also regarded as essential to the process of learning. The academic strength of the university lies in diverse disciplines including Engineering, Social Sciences, Arts and Sciences and Education. Admission to undergraduate programs is extremely competitive. Most of the students admitted to undergraduate programs at Boğaziçi University come from the top one half of one percent of the more than one million students taking the Turkish Higher Education Placement Examination. The distinctive place that Boğaziçi occupies in the world of higher education is matched by its unique and historic location on the shores of the Bosphorus.
